EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

My educational philosophy calls for the integration of subjects and learning through hands on discovery and application. I feel it is important to show links between theoretical concepts and practical function.

I believe that  integrating subjects is a valuable way to create other bridges for students to cross. Building a curriculum that flows from one subject into the next to illustrate the connections between different topics helps register the information in a student’s mind and provides alternate routes to recall the knowledge.

Many seemingly unrelated subjects share base information. Mathematics and art are companions to design. Geometry especially, hides a plethora of artistic connections. Students can learn history through technology and the Arts. Music often tells a tale of social commentary and cultural trend.

By learning from a holistic approach, students understand the connectedness of many topics retain facts better and develop tools for evaluating problems and determining answers.

People become who they are through exposure to a variety of ideas and stimuli. As a teacher I can best serve my students by giving them a safe and nurturing environment to explore the world and discover the many paths and digressions from A to Z.

EXPERIENCE

Since 1997, I have taught academic and artistic subjects to students of all ages, within formal classroom settings and as a tutor, one on one.

My science and math background comes from my degree in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer in Troy, NY. I am comfortable using technology tools as supplements to instruction .

I have ample practice conveying  information effectively to various types of ‘processing’ minds. My experience as a tutor speaks to this ability, having  worked with students of varying needs to tailor information and deliver it within a framed curriculum.

As an artist, I have studied ceramics under professional potters and tile makers in California. I spent several years working in the ceramic production industry. I taught art at Bemis School of Art in conjunction with the Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, at children’s camps in the Northeast and at a New Hampshire elementary school.

I employ an experimental attitude in my creative endeavors, having had great success in ‘learning by doing’. My earliest teachers, my grandparents, were pragmatic folks who exposed me to a great deal of analytical thinking and practice. My grandmother drilled my hands with counted cross stitch projects, weaving patterns and assorted needlecraft; teaching me the value of practice.

I take joy  in exploring various mediums: ceramics, textiles, paper; often combining mediums to fashion 2Dimensional and 3Dimensional compositions.
